Mrs. Mansfield's Middle Ground
Hinduism WebQuest

You have been hired by a cultural center to create a slide show teaching the basics of Hinduism to a non-Hindu audience.  The mission of the cultural center is to promote world peace and harmony through understanding among diverse groups.  Other consultants have been hired to create similar slide shows about other religions.  These slide shows will be viewed on kiosks in the cultural center rather than presented by a lecturer so you need to make sure that the slide show is interesting enough for people to go through the whole thing while providing accurate information.

Step 1:  Choose one of these slideshows on the basics of Hinduism.  You may also wish to view both.

Step 2: Create a PowerPoint slide show about Hinduism using the resources listed below or others that you find on your own. Be sure that the resources you find are from credible sources.  (If you have advanced skills, you may wish to set the show up to run in kiosk mode and time each slide to change automatically.)

Your final project may be done alone or with a single partner. It must include the following components:

  1. A title slide with a title, your name/s, and today's date.
  2. A Source slide at the end listing the urls (web addresses) of all sources.
  3. If you use art or maps from a web source, you must put the url on it.
  4. If you quote, summarize, or paraphrase a source, you must cite the source by including the web address, web name, or author's name, if known.

Your slide show must include the following information or answer the following questions. You may be able to combine some of these into a single slide or group of slides.

  1. Where is Hinduism practiced?  How did it start?
  2. What people or gods most influenced the religion?
  3. What are the basic tenets (beliefs and practices) of Hinduism?
  4. What is the caste system? How does it work?
  5. Explain Hindu beliefs about death, enlightenment and reincarnation.
  6. What two beliefs make Hinduism different from the common religions or cultural practices in your part of the world?
  7. What are the two most positive aspects of this religion?
  8. What works of art or literature best reveal this religion and why?
  9. What is the most surprising or interesting thing you learned about this religion?
  10. What is one Hindu holiday and how is it observed?
